Innovative corrosion protection film RENOLIT CP Advanced proves its value in offshore pilot project

Worms, September 24th, 2024 - The high-performance film RENOLIT CP Advanced has proven its benefit in a pioneering project on an offshore transformer platform in the North Sea. On August 14th, 2024, the innovative corrosion protection film was tested under real conditions and was able to demonstrate its advantages over conventional paint systems. The film was successfully applied to an area of over 3 square meters, spread over 13 different positions across four decks.

    Efficiency under challenging conditions

Despite challenging offshore conditions such as working at height, wind and high humidity of 70-80%, the two-person application team from WP Energy and RENOLIT were able to apply the film without any problems in just 4.5 hours of effective working time. A crucial advantage of RENOLIT CP Advanced: less dependence on weather and shorter drying time. A film patch is applied within a few seconds and requires no post-treatment - the corrosion protection effect is immediately active. Compared to conventional painting work, this can save 1 to 4 hours per square meter film being applied on the surface.

Another advantage of the RENOLIT CP Advanced film is its homogeneous thickness, regardless of the surface condition. The uniform protective layer forms a reliable barrier against corrosion, even on uneven surfaces such as those frequently encountered on transformer platforms or offshore installations.

Early corrosion treatment as a preventive measure

The pilot project also underlined the importance of early corrosion treatment. What looks like minor damage at first glance could actually mean that corrosion has already significantly progressed. Therefore, the approach with RENOLIT CP Advanced aims to handle corrosion in a timely manner and not to treat it as a mere “cosmetic repair”. This is crucial for the longevity and safety of offshore structures.

    Positive feedback and future perspectives

The response from all participants was consistently positive. Bernd Deharde, Managing Director of Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum GmbH & Co. KG, was very impressed: “As a modern company, we are always open to innovative solutions in the field of corrosion protection. We have been involved in the pilot project with RENOLIT CP Advanced right from the start. The first results are very promising. We are looking forward to the results of the regular inspections and are confident that this film solution will make an important contribution to a more efficient and sustainable protection of our offshore facilities and platforms.”

The positive assessment is shared by the experts on site. Nikolajs Korols-Senkevics, employee of WP Energy (service provider and exclusive sales partner of RENOLIT), reports: “Many of the employees on the transformer platform observed the work with great interest and were quickly convinced that the film solution is not only more effective and efficient compared to the conventional paint system, but also more visually appealing. Everyone present was impressed by the easy handling and the clean result.”

Focus on sustainability and environmental protection

Another key advantage of RENOLIT CP Advanced is its contribution to environmental protection. Unlike conventional paint systems, there is no risk of paint or primer dripping into the marine ecosystem. This underlines the potential of the film not only in increasing efficiency, but also in minimizing the environmental impact of corrosion protection work in sensitive offshore areas.

The successful implementation of this pilot project marks an important milestone in the development of innovative corrosion protection solutions - both for the onshore and especially for the offshore wind industry. RENOLIT plans to implement further projects with partners in the near future in order to further optimize the technology and expand its potential applications.

    About RENOLIT CP Advanced

RENOLIT CP Advanced is an innovative high-performance film that has been specially developed for corrosion protection in demanding environments and offers an efficient alternative to conventional painting processes. The film is characterized by its simple and fast application, which does not require a primer and therefore no drying time needed. With a thickness of ≥430 μm, RENOLIT CP Advanced ensures reliable protection at temperatures from -30 to 70°C. The film is certified according to BAW standard (ISO 12944-9 CX) and offers long-term corrosion protection of at least 10 years. RENOLIT CP Advanced is particularly environmentally friendly thanks to the elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during application. In addition, there is no risk of paint or other harmful substances dripping into the sea or entering the environment. The film is available in RAL 7035 (light grey) as standard, as well as in RAL 1023 (traffic yellow) upon request.
